The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) has announced the invention of 'Planar Trefoil Knot Antennas,' which might be a game changer in the communication business. It was created by Saurabh Shukla, a Ph.D. student and Prof. Ayyangar Ranganath Harish from the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Kanpur. The invention was given Indian Patent No. 431872 for its novel uses in the communication sector.
The antenna market is predicted to grow at fast pace in coming years due to increased use of wireless systems, wireless communications, and expanding acceptance of antenna in consumer electronics such as smartphones, laptops, wearables, tablets, and other devices. Furthermore, the market is likely to benefit from a considerable increase in the demand for smart antennas as a consequence of technical improvements in this category.
IIT Kanpur's idea might be a valuable contribution to this expanding market. Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Director of IIT Kanpur, stated on Monday, “This is a significant technological advancement with far-reaching implications for India's communication and other industries. The invention demonstrates the brilliance and experience of our IIT Kanpur researchers. Its capacity to generate both omni directional and directed patterns, which are an advantage over competitors in the market. We anticipate that our idea will revolutionise the way antennas are used in a wide range of applications, advancing wireless systems and addressing the rising need for smart antennas.” By providing novel uses, the 'Planar Trefoil Knot Antennas' signal an essential milestone in the communication business.
This novel construction can generate both omnidirectional (which radiates and receives energy 360 degree in the horizontal plane surrounding the antenna) and directed patterns, giving excellent adaptability for a wide range of end-users. Telecommunications, healthcare, consumer electronics, aerospace, defence, and other industries stand to gain from this technology.
The growing use of wireless systems and communications, as well as RFID (radio-frequency identification) tags for security and wireless computer networks, will boost the antenna market in the future years, along with expanding acceptance of antennas in different consumer gadgets. The introduction of 5G technology, as well as the emphasis on creating PCB (printed circuit boards), LCP (liquid crystalline polymers), and MPI (modified polyimide) solutions, all contribute to the expected growth.
The 'Planar Trefoil Knot Antennas' technology proposes an antenna with novel applications in WIFI, WLAN, RFID, indoor communication systems, radar systems, and other areas. In comparison to the market's existing massive 3D knot antennas, this innovation provides a small and cost-effective alternative that can be simply incorporated onto PCBs and takes up less space.
While the market potential is good, there are several obstacles to overcome, such as production costs and typical antennas' bulky construction. The 'Planar Trefoil Knot Antennas', on the other hand, solve these restrictions by providing a practical and efficient alternative.
IIT Kanpur demonstrates its commitment to pushing the limits of innovation and technology with the successful construction of 'Planar Trefoil Knot Antennas' and the issuance of the Indian Patent.
