IMD issues rainfall and thunderstorm warnings across southern states

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms across several southern states as a low-pressure system develops over the West Central Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to impact the northwest Bay off the coasts of North Andhra and South Odisha. A shear zone is positioned along approximately 16°N over north peninsular India, extending from 3.1 km to 7.6 km above mean sea level and tilting southward with height.

Today, the IMD has alerted residents about heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, and Tirupattur districts. From September 24 to 25, light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is anticipated at several locations across North Tamil Nadu, with isolated occurrences in South Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal region.

From September 26 to September 30, light to moderate rain is also expected in isolated places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Additionally, strong surface winds, reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h, are predicted to prevail over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal tomorrow.

The IMD forecast indicates moderate rain with lightning in North Tamil Nadu over the next week, with temperatures expected to rise by 2-4°C above normal. The combination of humid air and elevated temperatures is likely to create hot and uncomfortable weather in isolated areas of Tamil Nadu, as well as in Puducherry and Karaikal.

In Chennai and its surrounding suburbs, partly cloudy conditions are expected over the next 24 hours, with rain likely in several areas. Thunderstorms and lightning, along with light to moderate rain, are predicted. The maximum temperature in the city is projected to reach around 36-37°C, while the minimum temperature is expected to hover around 26-27°C.
