Increase in milk, egg, meat production in 2022-23; wool output declines

The Indian animal husbandry sector has witnessed a great surge in production across various segments in the year 2022-23, as revealed by the Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics released during the National Milk Day event in Guwahati by Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Parshottam Rupala.

Milk Production

The dairy industry witnesses a monumental rise in milk production, scaling up to an estimated 230.58 million tonnes, showcasing a robust growth of 22.81% over the past five years. This signifies a consistent upward trend, with an annual increase of 3.83% in 2022-23 alone. Uttar Pradesh emerges as the leading milk-producing state, contributing 15.72% to the total production, followed by Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh. Notably, Karnataka, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh exhibit the highest annual growth rates, signaling their significant strides in this sector.

Egg Production

The egg production sector experiences a massive surge, reaching an impressive 138.38 billion units during 2022-23, marking a notable 33.31% increase over the past five years. Andhra Pradesh leads the charge with a substantial 20.13% share of the total production, closely followed by Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal, and Karnataka. The impressive growth rates in West Bengal and Sikkim underscore their ascending positions in the egg production landscape.

Meat Production

The meat production sector showcases solid growth, amounting to 9.77 million tonnes in 2022-23, representing a commendable 20.39% rise over the past five years. Uttar Pradesh takes the lead with a 12.20% share of the total meat production, closely followed by West Bengal, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. Sikkim, Meghalaya, and Goa exhibit the most remarkable annual growth rates, indicating burgeoning potential in these regions for meat production.

Wool Production

Contrastingly, wool production faces a decline, amounting to 33.61 million kg during 2022-23, reflecting a negative growth of 16.84% over the last five years. However, a slight uptick of 2.12% in 2022-23 indicates potential for a reversal of this trend. Rajasthan dominates the wool production landscape, holding a substantial 47.98% share, followed by Jammu & Kashmir, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Himachal Pradesh. Encouragingly, Arunachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Jharkhand witness the highest annual growth rates, suggesting a promising resurgence in wool production.
