India achieves record growth in renewable energy capacity in FY 2024–25

India’s renewable energy sector marked a significant milestone in the Financial Year 2024–25, achieving a record-breaking total installed capacity of 220.10 gigawatts (GW), according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). This reflects a substantial annual addition of 29.52 GW, up from 198.75 GW in the previous fiscal year, and underlines India’s steady progress toward its ambitious target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030. The target forms part of the ‘Panchamrit’ climate commitments announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Solar energy led the capacity expansion, with 23.83 GW added during the year, a considerable rise compared to 15.03 GW added in FY 2023–24. This brought the country’s total installed solar capacity to 105.65 GW. The breakdown of this figure includes 81.01 GW from ground-mounted installations, 17.02 GW from rooftop solar systems, 2.87 GW from solar components within hybrid projects, and 4.74 GW from off-grid solar applications. The figures highlight the strong and continued uptake of solar technology across both centralized and decentralized energy solutions.

Wind power also maintained steady momentum, contributing 4.15 GW of new capacity during the fiscal year. This marked an increase from 3.25 GW installed in the previous year, bringing the cumulative installed wind power capacity in India to 50.04 GW. The growth reinforces the critical role of wind energy in India’s evolving renewable energy mix.

Other renewable sources, including bioenergy and small hydro power, continued to support India’s transition to a cleaner energy system. Bioenergy installations reached 11.58 GW in total, which includes 0.53 GW from off-grid and waste-to-energy projects. Meanwhile, small hydro power projects achieved a total capacity of 5.10 GW, with an additional 0.44 GW under implementation. These sectors contribute significantly to India’s decentralized and regionally diverse energy portfolio.

In addition to the installed capacities, India currently has a renewable energy project pipeline of 169.40 GW under implementation, along with 65.06 GW of capacity that has already been tendered. A large share of this capacity—65.29 GW—is linked to emerging clean energy solutions such as hybrid systems, round-the-clock (RTC) power, peaking power, and thermal-renewable bundling projects. These new approaches are designed to enhance grid reliability and ensure a stable and uninterrupted supply of renewable energy across the country.
