India achieves remarkable growth in renewable energy capacity, surpasses 209 GW in 2024

India’s renewable energy sector has experienced a remarkable surge in growth, with total installed capacity reaching 209.44 gigawatts (GW) as of December 2024, according to a report by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). This marks a significant 15.84% increase from 180.80 GW in December 2023, reflecting the country’s steadfast commitment to its clean energy targets and its broader vision under the ‘Panchamrit’ goals announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In 2024, India added a total of 28.64 GW of renewable energy capacity, a notable year-on-year increase of 119.46%, compared to the 13.05 GW added in 2023. This surge is part of the country’s strategic efforts to accelerate the transition towards clean energy and strengthen energy security while meeting climate commitments.

Solar energy has played a key role in driving this expansion. The sector saw the addition of 24.54 GW in 2024, bringing its cumulative installed capacity to 97.86 GW—an impressive 33.47% growth from 73.32 GW in 2023. Meanwhile, wind energy contributed 3.42 GW to the overall capacity increase, bringing its total installed capacity to 48.16 GW, which marks a 7.64% growth from the previous year.

Bioenergy has also demonstrated solid growth, with its installed capacity rising from 10.84 GW in December 2023 to 11.35 GW in December 2024, reflecting a 4.70% increase. Small hydro power projects contributed modestly to the sector’s expansion, with a slight increase in installed capacity from 4.99 GW to 5.10 GW, marking a 2.20% rise.
