“India building its own large language model,” PM Modi at AI Action Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the AI Action Summit at the Grand Palais in Paris, announced that India is building its own Large Language Model, underscoring the nation’s growing focus on advancing artificial intelligence technologies.

Highlighting India’s inclusive and innovative approach, PM Modi revealed that a unique public-private partnership model has been established to provide affordable resources, including compute power, to start-ups and researchers.

“India is building its own large language model considering our diversity. We also have a unique public-private partnership model for pooling resources like compute power, made available to our startups and researchers at an affordable cost. India is ready to share its experience and expertise to ensure that AI’s future is for good and for all,” the Prime Minister said.

Addressing concerns about the rise of AI, PM Modi asserted that machines will never surpass human intelligence, emphasizing the need for responsible technological advancements.

“We are at the dawn of the AI age that will shape the course of humanity. Some people worry about machines becoming superior in intelligence to humans. But no one holds the key to our collective future and shared destiny other than us humans. That sense of responsibility must guide us,” he said.

The Prime Minister highlighted India’s digital public infrastructure, describing it as open, accessible, and capable of serving over 1.4 billion people at a remarkably low cost.

“India has successfully built a digital public infrastructure for over 1.4 billion people at a very low cost. It is built around an open and accessible network with regulations and diverse applications to modernize our economy, reform governance, and transform lives,” he added.

PM Modi emphasized that data empowerment forms the cornerstone of India’s National AI Mission.

“We have unlocked the power of data through our data empowerment and protection architecture. Digital commerce has become democratic and accessible. This vision is the foundation of India’s National AI Mission,” he said.

During his speech, the Prime Minister highlighted India’s leadership in AI adoption and its development of techno-legal solutions for data privacy. He reiterated India’s global role in fostering responsible AI use during its G20 Presidency.

“Today, India leads in AI adoption and techno-legal solutions on data privacy. We are developing AI applications for public good and have one of the world’s largest AI talent pools. India is ready to share its experience and expertise to ensure that AI’s future benefits everyone,” PM Modi concluded.
