India can play an essential and very constructive role: Poland PM Tusk on ending Russia-Ukraine war

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Thursday said that India could play a crucial role in resolving the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed his willingness to pursue a peaceful and just end to the conflict.

In a joint press conference in Warsaw with PM Modi, Tusk said, “We began by addressing some very emotional issues. PM Modi confirmed his readiness for a peaceful, rightful, and immediate end to the war. We believe that India can play an essential and very constructive role, making this announcement highly significant for us. PM, in 10 hours, you will visit Ukraine, and we believe that your visit will be historic.”

Tusk underlined the decision to elevate the relationship between Poland and India to the level of a strategic partnership. He also spoke about strengthening cooperation in sectors like trade and defense, saying, “Regarding exchanges between India and Poland, we discussed various topics. We want to strengthen our cooperation in the areas of defense and trade, as there are immense mutual possibilities.”

Tusk stressed that Poland is ready to contribute to India’s defense modernization. “We have the necessary technological capability and experts. India is a global leader in the field of Artificial Intelligence, and we are using this technology in several areas, including defense. We express our gratitude to you for inviting our companies to your country. We seek investment in the defense sector and aim to collaborate closely”, he said.

The Polish PM emphasized the significance of PM Modi’s visit to Poland, saying, “This is a very important day for both of our countries. It is a great honour for us to host the Prime Minister of India on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the strategic ties between our countries. This underscores the importance of this visit.”

He further underscored that despite geographical and traditional differences between India and Poland, both nations understand each other well. “It is clear that relations between our two countries are improving, which is essential for the entire region. There is no dispute or conflict between our countries. We understand each other well despite our geographical differences and distinct traditions and histories. But history has taught both our countries to respect principles, borders, regional integrity, sovereignty, and the rule of law.”

Tusk also congratulated PM Modi on winning the 18th Lok Sabha elections. “The entire world praises India because its government is highly democratic. We don’t see much of this in other parts of the world. Once again, I would like to congratulate you on your electoral victory. This is very satisfying, and I too understand that your government is elected based on the people’s mandate.”, he said.
