India ensures protocols in border fencing, urges Dhaka’s cooperation

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned Bangladesh’s Acting High Commissioner to India, Md. Nural Islam, to the South Block on Monday to address border security concerns and ongoing measures to combat cross-border crimes.

During the meeting, the MEA conveyed that India has adhered to all protocols and agreements established between the two nations, as well as those between the Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), regarding security measures, including the construction of border fencing.

Speaking to reporters, the MEA official stated, “We have assured the Bangladeshi authorities that all measures at the border are in line with the agreements signed by the two governments. The fencing and other security arrangements are being implemented to address shared concerns.”

India reiterated its efforts to secure a crime-free border by tackling cross-border criminal activities, smuggling, and human trafficking. According to the MEA, measures such as the installation of barbed wire fencing, border lighting, technical surveillance devices, and cattle fences have been undertaken to strengthen the border.

“We are committed to ensuring safety and preventing activities like smuggling and illegal crossings that jeopardize regional stability. Cooperation is essential for addressing these challenges effectively,” the MEA official added.

India also emphasized its expectation that Bangladesh would uphold prior commitments and agreements related to border management. It urged a collaborative approach to combat crimes across the shared boundary.

Both sides are expected to hold further discussions in the coming months to ensure the effective implementation of agreed measures for better border security.
