India’s electronics manufacturing sector has reached a historic milestone with the inauguration of Syrma SGS Technology’s state-of-the-art laptop assembly line in Chennai, inaugurated by Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw.
A Major Step in ‘Make in India’
The new assembly line will initially produce 100,000 laptops annually, with production capacity expected to scale up to 1 million units within the next 1-2 years.
This initiative is part of the government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) 2.0 scheme for IT hardware. PLI 2.0 is propelling India’s IT hardware revolution, having already driven ₹10,000 crore in production and the creation of 3,900 jobs in just 18 months. Syrma SGS operates four manufacturing units in Chennai, with laptop production now underway at Unit 3.
Progress Under PLI 2.0 for IT Hardware
Launched in May 2023, PLI 2.0 for IT hardware has already delivered significant results. Covering products like laptops, tablets, PCs, servers, and ultra-small form factor devices, the scheme is expected to generate ₹3.5 lakh crore in production and 47,000 jobs across the country. So far, the scheme has seen investments of Rs. 520 crore, Rs.10,000 crore worth of production, and the creation of 3,900 jobs as of December 2024.
Global Partnerships and Local Impact
Syrma SGS has partnered with Taiwanese tech giant Micro-Star International (MSI) to produce high-quality laptops for both domestic and global markets. This facility is expected to create 150-200 specialized jobs in electronics manufacturing by FY26, making a significant impact on Tamil Nadu’s regional economy and contributing to India’s national growth. The laptops produced will meet international standards, showcasing India’s advanced manufacturing and technical capabilities.
India’s Electronics Manufacturing Surge
India’s electronics manufacturing sector has witnessed extraordinary growth, with total production soaring from ₹2.4 lakh crore in 2014 to Rs. 9.8 lakh crore in 2024. Mobile manufacturing alone contributes ₹4.4 lakh crore, with exports reaching ₹1.5 lakh crore in 2024. Notably, 98% of mobile phones used in India are now manufactured domestically, with smartphones becoming the country’s fourth-largest export item.
Tamil Nadu’s Key Role
Tamil Nadu has emerged as a critical player in India’s electronics manufacturing boom. The state hosts 47 manufacturing units supported by various Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) schemes. Seven out of the 27 approved units under PLI 2.0 for large-scale electronics manufacturing are located in Tamil Nadu. Significant investments under schemes like the Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS) and the Modified Special Incentive Package Scheme (M-SIPS) have boosted production, with Tamil Nadu contributing approximately 30% of India’s electronics exports.
The establishment of the Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) in Sriperumbudur is expected to attract further investments of ₹8,700 crore and create over 36,000 jobs, solidifying Tamil Nadu’s role as a hub for electronics manufacturing.
The Future of Laptop Manufacturing in India
The inauguration of Syrma SGS’s laptop assembly line marks a significant step towards reducing India’s dependence on imports, creating more employment opportunities, and fostering world-class manufacturing capabilities. As production scales up, India is positioning itself to become a global leader in IT hardware manufacturing.
With initiatives like PLI 2.0, India continues to accelerate its journey toward becoming a global electronics manufacturing powerhouse.
