India leads BIMSTEC security chiefs meeting in Myanmar

India assumed the leadership role for security sector cooperation within the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

This development was highlighted during the Senior Officials’ Meeting held in Nay Pyi Taw to prepare for the upcoming 4th Meeting of BIMSTEC National Security Chiefs.

“The Indian delegation participated in the Senior Officials’ Meeting to prepare for the 4th Meeting of BIMSTEC National Security Chiefs in Nay Pyi Taw. India is the Lead Country for security sector cooperation in BIMSTEC” said Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, on Thursday.

Earlier this month, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar hosted foreign ministers from BIMSTEC member countries in New Delhi, aiming to enhance regional cooperation.

BIMSTEC, a regional organization, connects countries around the Bay of Bengal to foster economic growth, trade, and cooperation in areas such as transportation, energy, and counter-terrorism. The initiative seeks to strengthen ties and promote development among its member states: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
