India marks 77th Republic Day with celebrations in Riyadh

The Embassy of India in Riyadh marked the 77th Republic Day with a ceremony attended by nearly 500 people, including members of the Indian community, Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award recipients, embassy officials and representatives of the media in Saudi Arabia. The celebrations began with the unfurling of the national flag by India’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Dr Suhel Ajaz Khan, followed by the singing of the national anthem and the offering of floral tributes at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi. The ambassador then read out the President of India’s message to the nation and to Indians living overseas on the occasion of Republic Day.

The official proceedings were followed by cultural performances presented by schoolchildren and members of the Indian community. The programme featured a blend of classical and contemporary dance and musical presentations, all centred on patriotic themes. Special segments were included to mark the 150th anniversary of India’s national song, “Vande Mataram”, highlighting its historical and cultural significance. A photo booth focusing on the importance of the national song was also set up at the venue. Following the cultural programme, Dr Khan interacted with members of the Indian diaspora and local journalists, underscoring the role of the community in strengthening people-to-people ties between India and Saudi Arabia. The event reflected the spirit of national pride and unity among Indians in the Kingdom, as they came together to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India on January 26, 1950.
