Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has emphasized India’s potential to become a global hub for data centres. Speaking at the Thuglak 55th-year anniversary program in Chennai, Goyal highlighted efforts to enhance the country’s infrastructure and boost investments in the technology sector.
Goyal pointed out that India’s interconnected power grid, established within three years by the Union Government, has eliminated cost differences between northern and southern regions. He noted that India’s ability to provide green and reliable energy solutions has drawn global attention, creating opportunities in areas such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and technology-driven businesses.
“No other country has such a large interconnected grid. This is why international businesses are keen to invest in India, fostering job creation and economic growth,” Goyal said.
Delivering a keynote address titled India’s Rise and the Challenges it Faces, Goyal credited the country’s progress to a structured, result-oriented approach driven by what he termed the 5Ds—Democracy, Demographic Dividend, Diversity, Demand, and Dependability. These principles, he explained, have steered development across six key areas: global leadership; economy, manufacturing, and investments; innovation and entrepreneurship; infrastructure; global soft power; and women-led initiatives.
Goyal also discussed the government’s focus on welfare programs aimed at achieving sustainable development goals. Initiatives include providing universal access to essentials such as food, housing, education, healthcare, digital connectivity, piped water, and energy-efficient systems.
Despite acknowledging challenges, Goyal expressed confidence in the nation’s resilience. He stressed the importance of inclusive growth in confronting issues that test the country’s unity, security, and aspirations.
“The resilience that has powered India’s ascent will guide us through these obstacles,” he stated.
Goyal also underlined the government’s emphasis on accountability, highlighting that ministers and bureaucrats are trained to be responsive to the needs of the people.
Concluding his speech, Goyal revisited the Prime Minister’s 11 resolutions, announced during the 75th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Indian Constitution, which form the basis for building a developed India.
