India re-elected to Universal Postal Union’s governing councils

India has been re-elected to the Council of Administration (CA) and the Postal Operations Council (POC) of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) at the 28th Congress of the UN agency held in Dubai, the government said on Friday.

The re-election underscores the international community’s confidence in India’s leadership in postal reforms, digital transformation and global cooperation, the Ministry of Communications said in a statement.

The UPU, a specialised agency of the United Nations, serves as the primary forum for cooperation among postal sector stakeholders. While the CA oversees policy, regulatory and governance matters, the POC functions as the technical and operational body driving the modernisation of postal services worldwide.

India, a UPU member since 1876, has consistently contributed to strengthening the global postal network. In the last Congress cycle, India championed initiatives such as DigiPIN (digital addressing), UPI-enabled cross-border remittances and e-commerce facilitation through Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras. It also supported South-South cooperation under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme by training postal officials from Asia, Africa and other regions.

India has also contributed to the financial sustainability of the UPU through membership contributions and voluntary funding. Building on these initiatives, it will continue to expand efforts in innovation, inclusivity and capacity building during the new Congress cycle in Dubai, the ministry said.

Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia welcomed the development, saying India will play a proactive role in shaping the future of the global postal sector and has expressed intent to assume a leadership role within the Council of Administration.
