India set to send its first manned mission in ocean ‘Samdrayaan Mission’ in 2026 

After the success of Chandrayaan Mission, India is set to launch the Samudrayaan Mission to explore depths of the deep ocean and its resources. This will be India's first manned mission to explore the mystery of the ocean. In this mission, the submarine will carry three scientists to a depth of 6000 meters in a submersible vehicle. 

In a written reply in the upper house of parliament, Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju shared the details regarding Smaudrayaan Mission. Rijiju added that Samudrayaan Mission is a part of the centre's Blue Economy policy which aims a sustainable utilization of ocean resources for economic growth of the country. He assured that this mission will not disturb the ecosystem.  

Samudrayaan Mission will be sent in 2026. The estimated cost of this project is Rs 5000 crore. For this mission, a vehicle called 'Matsya 6000' is being designed and developed by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai. This mission was approved in June 2021 by the Ministry of Earth Sciences. 

India is surrounded by oceans with its three sides and around 30% of the population of India resides in coastal areas. These coastal regions play a major role in India's economy. This manned mission is going to observe and explore the unexplored deep-sea areas.
