India signs $248 million deal with Russia for upgraded T-72 tank engines

The Ministry of Defence has signed a $248 million contract with Russia’s Rosoboronexport (RoE) for the procurement of 1,000 horsepower (HP) engines for T-72 tanks. The deal includes the supply of engines in fully formed, completely knocked down, and semi knocked down conditions.

As part of the agreement, Rosoboronexport will transfer technology to Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (Heavy Vehicle Factory) in Avadi, Chennai. This will facilitate the integration and licensed production of the engines in India, supporting the “Make in India” initiative in the defence sector.

The Indian Army’s T-72 tanks, currently powered by 780 HP engines, serve as the backbone of the country’s armored fleet.
