India has reached a significant milestone in railway locomotive manufacturing, surpassing the United States and Europe by producing 1,681 locomotives in the financial year 2024-25. This marks a 19% increase compared to 1,472 locomotives produced in 2023-24, further solidifying India’s leadership in the global railway sector.
The remarkable surge in locomotive production is driven by the success of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, which has significantly enhanced the country’s manufacturing capabilities. Between 2004 and 2014, India produced 4,695 locomotives, with an annual average of 470. In the following decade, from 2014 to 2024, locomotive production more than doubled, reaching 9,168 units, raising the annual average to 917.
In the financial year 2024-25, Indian Railways’ manufacturing units played a crucial role in achieving this record. Chittaranjan Locomotive Works contributed the highest number with 700 locomotives, followed by Banaras Locomotive Works with 477, while Patiala Locomotive Works produced 304 units. The Madhepura and Marhowrah factories also made significant contributions, each manufacturing 100 locomotives.
A large portion of the locomotives produced was designed for freight operations, reflecting India’s focus on enhancing its goods transportation infrastructure. Among the 1,681 locomotives manufactured, WAG-9/9H locomotives accounted for the largest share with 1,047 units, while WAG-9 Twin locomotives totaled 148. Other significant categories included WAP-7 locomotives (272 units), WAG-12B locomotives (100 units), and WDG-4G/6G locomotives (100 units).
