India to hold International Day of Yoga event at UN on June 18

The Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations on Friday announced that the 2026 celebration of the International Day of Yoga at the United Nations headquarters will be held on June 18.

In a post on X, the Mission said it was “delighted to announce” the event, describing yoga as “an invaluable gift of ancient Indian tradition” that has emerged as a trusted means to enhance physical and mental well-being.

“The word ‘yoga’ is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘yuj’, meaning ‘to join’, ‘to yoke’ or ‘to unite’, symbolising the unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; and harmony between humans and nature,” the statement said, adding that it reflects a holistic approach to health and well-being.

June 21 was declared the International Day of Yoga by the United Nations General Assembly following efforts led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The UN resolution recognises yoga as a holistic practice that promotes balance in all aspects of life and emphasises prevention over cure.

Citing Sanskrit poet Bhartrhari, the statement said regular practice of yoga helps cultivate virtues such as courage, forgiveness and mental peace, while fostering self-control, compassion and knowledge.
