External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, while addressing the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards Ceremony, emphasized the contributions of the Indian diaspora to global society. Speaking at the valedictory session, he noted how individuals of Indian origin have played key roles worldwide, including holding political positions and leading organizations. Jaishankar highlighted that these efforts have deepened India’s connections with other countries.
Jaishankar said that the diaspora has contributed to diverse fields through their talent, creativity, and perseverance. He mentioned their presence in politics, leadership roles, and numerous other sectors, underlining their growing impact on India’s global image and relationships.
Discussing the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman awards, Jaishankar described them as a recognition of the contributions made by members of the Indian diaspora. He expressed confidence that the recipients would continue to strengthen ties between India and the world. The awards, conferred by President Droupadi Murmu, reflect India’s appreciation for its diaspora.
Jaishankar spoke about the interconnected nature of the world, focusing on technology and mobility of talent. He explained that India approaches global relations with two core perspectives: the country’s progress as a priority and the ethos of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” or the idea of the world as one family. He remarked that the diaspora plays a role in shaping India’s image as a dynamic and evolving nation.
Referring to the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD), Jaishankar highlighted its role as a platform for engaging with the diaspora. He expressed satisfaction with the wide-ranging discussions that took place during the event and conveyed gratitude to President Murmu for her presence at the convention’s conclusion.
Acknowledging the Ministry of External Affairs’ role, Jaishankar credited it with organizing PBD conventions for two decades. These events have facilitated stronger connections between Indian states and the diaspora and enhanced India’s global standing.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is a key initiative by the Indian government to engage with its diaspora. The 18th edition of the convention is being held in collaboration with the Odisha state government in Bhubaneswar from January 8 to 10. This year’s theme is “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat,” with attendees from over 50 countries participating.
