Indian expats mark 77th Republic day across UAE

Indian expatriates across the UAE marked India’s 77th republic day with widespread celebrations at diplomatic missions and community centres, with large turnouts despite rain, cooler weather and the day falling on a working Monday.

At the Indian consulate in Dubai, consul general Satish Sivan unfurled the national flag and said India-UAE relations had “reached new heights”, particularly following the recent visit of UAE president Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to India. He noted that ties rooted in historical and cultural connections have evolved into a comprehensive strategic partnership spanning trade, energy, defence, technology and people-to-people exchanges.Sivan reflected on the sacrifices of freedom fighters and highlighted the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. Bilateral trade has crossed USD 100 billion, with both countries aiming to double it to USD 200 billion by 2032.

In Abu Dhabi, ceremonies were held at the Indian embassy, where members gathered to commemorate the adoption of the Indian constitution on January 26, 1950. India’s ambassador to the UAE, Deepak Mittal, highlighted advances in bilateral cooperation and said decisions taken during the UAE president’s visit would strengthen the strategic defence partnership. “These steps will contribute not only to our bilateral relationship but also to global peace and security,” he said.

Republic Day observances also began on January 25 with a reception hosted by the Indian Consulate in Dubai, attended by UAE Minister of Foreign Trade Thani Al Zeyoudi, India’s Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale, and Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor. The programme opened with the national anthems of India and the UAE, performed by the Dubai Police band, followed by cultural performances celebrating India’s heritage and marking 150 years of “Vande Mataram”.

Beyond the diplomatic missions, community organisations including Indian Association Sharjah, Indian Association Ajman, Indian Relief Committee Ras Al Khaimah, Indian Association Umm Al Quwain and the Indian Social Centre Ajman also held flag hoisting ceremonies, reflecting the scale and unity of the Indian community across the UAE.
