Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma Meets Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina

Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma called on Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday at her official residence Ganabhaban in Dhaka. The High Commissioner conveyed condolences on loss of lives and properties during recent unrest.

He welcomed the normalcy that steadily is being restored and economic activities gradually resuming in Bangladesh. Pranay Verma said that as a close neighbour and partner of Bangladesh, India will always support policies and endeavours to realize their vision of a stable, progressive and prosperous Bangladesh.

The High Commissioner also briefed Prime Minister Hasina on the implementation of various outcomes achieved during her state visit to India in June 2024. He said that the visit had achieved substantive outcomes, and not only consolidated past achievements gained by the two countries, but also created a blueprint for  future cooperation.

Many important outcomes such as – Digital Partnership, Green Partnership, Joint Development of Satellite: and new areas of cooperation like Blue Economy, Oceanography, FinTech etc. – reflected joint efforts by both sides in building a future-oriented partnership based on people’s shared aspirations for the future, he added.

After the call on, Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Md. Nayeemul Islam Khan briefed the reporters in Dhaka. As per the briefing, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, talking about relationships with the neighbouring countries, has said that the doors are open for strengthening connectivity among Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Bhutan. 

Prime Minister Hasina said the anarchists had tried to create Sri Lanka-type mayhem in the country during the recent quota reform movement, and they planned to topple the government.

Sheikh Hasina said the recent movement centering on quota reform was not a normal movement at all; rather, at one stage it turned into almost a terrorist-like attack. The Prime Minister expressed her sadness and sorrow at the loss of lives and properties in the recent mayhem.
