Indian Navy to commission indigenous multipurpose warship Samarthak on October 16

The Indian Navy will commission Samarthak, the first of four Multi-Purpose Vessels being inducted into its fleet, at Naval Base Karwar on October 16.

Built by Larsen & Toubro under the Make in India initiative, the vessel will support a range of operational requirements and mark another milestone in India’s pursuit of defence self-reliance.

Designed primarily for maritime surveillance and patrol, Samarthak can also undertake low-intensity maritime operations and serve as a platform for target deployment and trials.

It can operate as a mothership for unmanned and autonomous systems, support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and be converted into a limited hospital ship. The vessel also has capabilities for salvage-related operations.

Its integrated combat suite combines indigenous sensors, weapons and electronic systems optimised for challenging maritime conditions.

Samarthak’s crest depicts an Indian elephant emerging from the waves, symbolising strength, intelligence and agility. Its motto, “विजयार्थम् एकनिष्ठता”, means “Victory is Our Sole Aim”.
