Indian Navy to strengthen space-based communications with launch of indigenous GSAT-7R satellite

In a major boost to India’s maritime communication network, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to launch the Indian Navy’s GSAT-7R (CMS-03) communication satellite on Sunday from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. The indigenously designed and developed satellite will be the most advanced communication platform for the Navy to date, enhancing its space-based communications and maritime domain awareness capabilities.

Weighing around 4,400 kilograms, GSAT-7R will be India’s heaviest communication satellite. It incorporates several indigenous, state-of-the-art components developed to meet the Navy’s operational requirements under the spirit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).

The satellite is designed to provide robust telecommunication coverage across the Indian Ocean Region, supporting high-capacity bandwidth for secure and seamless communications. Its advanced transponders will facilitate voice, data, and video links across multiple communication bands, ensuring reliable connectivity between Indian Navy ships, aircraft, submarines, and Maritime Operations Centres.

Once operational, GSAT-7R will significantly strengthen the Navy’s ability to maintain real-time situational awareness and coordination across its extensive maritime operations.
