Indian Railways approves Rs 647.58 crore projects in Gujarat and Bihar to boost connectivity and ease congestion

The Ministry of Railways has approved two key infrastructure projects in Gujarat and Bihar aimed at strengthening rail connectivity, reducing congestion, and improving operational efficiency. The combined cost of the projects is ₹647.58 crore.

One of the projects involves the construction of a Rail Over Rail (RoR) flyover at Kosamba under the Western Railway. The 9.20-km Kosamba-Umrapada Gauge Conversion section will be integrated with the Mumbai-Vadodara main line through this flyover, at an estimated cost of ₹344.38 crore.

The Ministry said the flyover is necessary due to the presence of the Dedicated Freight Corridor alignment, which makes surface crossings unfeasible. Once completed, the RoR structure will enable seamless connectivity, ensuring uninterrupted and safer train movement while maximising the benefits of the ongoing gauge conversion.

The second project is the construction of a 13.38-km rail bypass at Bhagalpur under the Eastern Railway, with an estimated cost of ₹303.20 crore. The bypass will connect Gonudham Halt on the Barahat-Bhagalpur section with Sabour on the Bhagalpur-Sahibganj route.

Currently, the Barahat-Bhagalpur section is operating beyond 125% capacity, leading to severe congestion. Trains passing through the junction require engine reversal at Bhagalpur, causing delays and inefficiencies. The new bypass is expected to ease congestion, improve punctuality, and streamline operations by eliminating the need for such reversals.

The Ministry said these projects will significantly enhance safety, improve operational fluidity, and support the growing demand for passenger and freight movement. The initiatives are part of Indian Railways’ broader focus on capacity augmentation and network decongestion across the country.
