Indians in Mauritius welcome PM Modi with traditional Bihari Geet Gawai

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm and culturally rich welcome upon his arrival in Mauritius on Tuesday, as members of the Indian diaspora greeted him with the traditional Bihari Geet Gawai performance. The Prime Minister was seen enjoying the musical rendition, clapping along with the performers.

Geet Gawai is a traditional Bhojpuri musical ensemble that reflects the deep cultural heritage brought to Mauritius by women from the Bhojpuri-speaking regions of India. Recognizing its cultural significance, UNESCO inscribed Geet Gawai on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2016.

Expressing her excitement, Divya, a member of the Indian community, shared, “I met PM Modi and had the opportunity to shake hands with him. I am very happy to be part of such a special occasion.”

Another diaspora member, Saraswati, echoed similar sentiments, saying, “It feels amazing to be here and meet our Prime Minister. The relationship between India and Mauritius has always been strong, and we hope it continues to grow.”

Preeti, another attendee, added, “I got the chance to meet PM Modi and shake hands with him. It was a wonderful experience to speak to him.”

During his two-day visit, PM Modi will participate in multiple engagements, including high-level talks with the Mauritian leadership, addressing a community programme, and attending Mauritius’ 57th National Day celebrations as the Chief Guest.
