India’s October coal production surges to 84.5 million tonnes

India’s coal production reached a total of 84.45 million tonnes in October, a 7.48 percent increase from the 78.57 million tonnes produced in the same month last year, according to the Ministry of Coal.

Captive and other entities also demonstrated strong output, producing 16.59 million tonnes in October, a substantial rise from last year’s 11.70 million tonnes—a growth rate of 41.75 percent.

For the fiscal year through October 2024, cumulative coal production reached 537.45 million tonnes, up 6.10 percent from 506.56 million tonnes in the same period of 2023-24. Coal dispatches also saw a notable uptick, with October 2024 figures at 82.89 million tonnes—a 4.60 percent increase from October 2023’s 79.25 million tonnes.

The Ministry noted a similar growth in coal dispatches from captive and other entities, reaching 16.18 million tonnes in October 2024, up 36.83 percent from 11.83 million tonnes in October 2023. Cumulative coal dispatches from April to October 2024 also grew, totaling 571.39 million tonnes, marking a 5.52 percent rise over the same period last year.
