IOA urges states, UTs to plant 2,036 trees each to mark Olympic Day

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has urged all affiliated State and Union Territory Olympic Associations to plant 2,036 trees each as part of the nationwide celebrations of Olympic Day, aiming to promote environmental sustainability through sport.

In a communication to the affiliated units, IOA President P. T. Usha called on state and UT associations to organise tree plantation drives involving athletes, sports bodies, educational institutions and youth organisations.

The initiative seeks to underline the Olympic Movement’s commitment to environmental responsibility while encouraging communities across the country to celebrate Olympic Day through meaningful ecological action.

According to the IOA, the nationwide plantation campaign aligns with the International Olympic Committee’s Olympic Forest initiative, which promotes sustainability and biodiversity through tree-planting activities worldwide. The symbolic plantation of 2,036 trees represents the Olympic Movement’s aspiration to build a greener and more sustainable future.

State and UT Olympic Associations have been encouraged to collaborate with local sports organisations, schools, government agencies and community groups to ensure broad participation. Plantation activities may be organised at sports complexes, educational institutions, parks and other public spaces to maximise public engagement.

The IOA has also requested affiliated units to document the events and share reports and photographs so that the collective effort can be highlighted as part of India’s Olympic Day celebrations.

The initiative, the association said, reflects the Olympic Movement’s broader vision of building a healthier and better world through sport while promoting environmental sustainability for future generations.
