IPL 2024: Devon Conway ruled out, CSK name Richard Gleeson as replacement

By: Aditya Ahuja

In a massive setback for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kiwi southpaw Devon Conway has been ruled out of the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). In his absence, England speedster Richard Gleeson has been announced as his replacement.

Conway missed the first phase of the Indian Premier League 2024 due to a fractured thumb, with CSK management initially hopeful for his return in the second leg of the season. However, Conway’s recovery has not progressed as expected, leading to his exclusion for the remainder of the campaign.

The Black Caps wicket-keeper batter sustained his injury during the T20 International series against Australia in February and subsequently underwent surgery.

Conway’s absence is a big loss for CSK, given his vital role in the team’s success over the last two IPL seasons. He played a crucial part in CSK’s fifth title win last year and was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ in the final.

As for Gleeson, it marks his debut in the mega league, as he joins the yellow army for his base price of Rs 50 lakh.

Gleeson brings some international experience, having featured in six T20Is for England, where he claimed nine wickets at an economy rate of 8.90, with the best figures of 3/15. Interestingly, his first two international scalps were Indian captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Gleeson’s overall T20 record is impressive, with 101 wickets in 90 matches at an economy rate of 8.18. His bowling prowess includes a five-wicket haul and multiple four-wicket performances.

CSK currently sits at the third position on the IPL 2024 points table and is set to face Lucknow Super Giants in an away match on Friday.
