A commanding all-round performance led by Sanju Samson’s unbeaten century and Akeal Hosein’s four-wicket haul powered Chennai Super Kings to a 103-run victory over Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League on Thursday.
Samson struck 101 not out off 56 balls to anchor Chennai’s 207 for six after being put in to bat at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. The opener held the innings together despite regular wickets, accelerating in the death overs to reach his hundred in 54 deliveries, hitting 10 fours and six sixes.
In reply, Mumbai Indians were bundled out for 104 in 19 overs, with left-arm spinner Hosein returning figures of 4-17 to dismantle the chase. Chennai’s win was set up by early strikes, with Quinton de Kock falling for seven and Naman Dhir dismissed cheaply as Mumbai slumped under pressure.
Tilak Varma (37) and Suryakumar Yadav (36) attempted a recovery with a 73-run stand, but Hosein broke the partnership in the 13th over, triggering a collapse. Captain Hardik Pandya was dismissed for a duck, and Mumbai lost wickets in quick succession to fall well short of the target.
Earlier, Chennai raced to 50 inside four overs, with Ruturaj Gaikwad contributing 22 before falling early. Contributions from Sarfaraz Khan (14), Dewald Brevis (21) and Jamie Overton (15) supported Samson’s innings, which ensured Chennai crossed the 200-run mark.
For Mumbai, Allah Ghazanfar picked up 2-25, while Ashwani Kumar also took two wickets but could not prevent a heavy defeat.
