Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi arrives in Delhi for 20th India-Iran Joint Commission Meeting

Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday to co-chair the 20th India-Iran Joint Commission Meeting.

The high-level dialogue comes as the two nations mark the 75th anniversary of the India-Iran Friendship Treaty.

Welcoming Araghchi, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal wrote on X: “Warm welcome to FM Seyed Abbas Araghchi, as he arrives in New Delhi for the India-Iran Joint Commission Meeting. An opportunity to review and enhance bilateral cooperation on the 75th Anniversary of the India-Iran Friendship Treaty.”

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this is Araghchi’s first visit to India since assuming office as Iran’s Foreign Minister in August 2024. His two-day trip includes co-chairing the Joint Commission Meeting and holding a series of high-level meetings with Indian leadership.

On Thursday, Araghchi will meet External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar at Hyderabad House, followed by a courtesy call on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan later in the day.

“The Joint Commission Meeting, being held on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the signing of the India-Iran Friendship Treaty, will review issues of mutual interest between the two countries and the way forward in strengthening bilateral relations,” the MEA said in a statement.

Earlier this week, the Iranian Embassy in India said that Araghchi would travel to New Delhi after a stop in Islamabad, where he would hold discussions with Pakistani officials.

On April 25, in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir—which claimed 26 lives—Araghchi had called for peace in the region.
