Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC), in partnership with the Linguistic Empowerment Cell (LEC) of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), successfully hosted an International Symposium on ‘Interpreter Education and Research: Perspectives from the United States, Canada, and India’ at JNU today.
The event aimed to foster global collaboration, promote innovative practices, and enhance accessible communication for the Deaf community.
Prominent speakers included Dr. Brenda Nicodemus, Professor Emerita at Gallaudet University, USA, and Dr. Marty Taylor, a leading expert in sign language interpretation from Canada.
They shared their expertise on interpreting research and education across the three countries. Kumar Raju, Director of ISLRTC, Prof. Dipendra Nath Das, Rector of JNU, Prof. Preeti Das, Chief Coordinator of LEC, and Dr. Sandesha Rayapa-Garbiyal, AP, JNU, also delivered insightful speeches during the inaugural session.
The symposium featured technical sessions and a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Andesha Mangla, Assistant Professor at ISLRTC. Discussions focused on technological advancements in interpretation, ethical standards, and developments in interpreter education.
A lively question-and-answer session provided further engagement between the audience and experts.
Attendees included students and faculty from the Diploma in Indian Sign Language Interpretation (DISLI) and Diploma in Teaching Indian Sign Language (DTISL) programs, Deaf association members, and other stakeholders.
A total of 370 individuals attended the event in person, with 110 others joining virtually from National Institutes and CRCs. The symposium concluded with the National Anthem performed in Indian Sign Language.
