Jaishankar addresses Army commanders conference, stresses need for ‘whole of government’ approach to national security

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, speaking at the Army Commanders’ Conference in New Delhi on Tuesday, underscored the importance of a “whole-of-government” approach to strengthen national security. He discussed the complexities of current geopolitics and highlighted the challenges, opportunities, and strategic imperatives facing India.

In a post on X, Jaishankar wrote, “Pleased to address the Army Commanders Conference in Delhi today. Discussed the intricacies of current geopolitics, as well as its challenges, possibilities, and opportunities. Urged that a more ‘whole of the government’ approach is needed to effectively advance national security.”

The second Army Commanders Conference for 2024 is being conducted in two phases, blending both in-person and hybrid formats. The first phase took place from October 10-11 at a forward location in Gangtok, where Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed senior officers via video conference from the Sukna Cantonment in Darjeeling. Discussions during this phase focused on border security challenges and operational strategies.

In the ongoing second phase, which began on October 28 in the national capital, the Army’s senior leadership will delve into the evolving geopolitical landscape and review the force’s operational preparedness.

The conference also includes meetings of various Board of Governors to discuss welfare schemes and financial security measures for soldiers, veterans, and their families.

The conference aims to ensure the Indian Army remains “progressive, forward-looking, adaptive, and future-ready.” Senior officers are expected to deliberate on critical national security issues, including the integration of Civil-Military Fusion and the Diplomatic, Information, Military, and Economic (DIME) framework to counter modern threats.

The evolving nature of warfare is also a key focus, with discussions on the development of low-cost technologies and alternative strategies to address rapidly changing security dynamics.
