India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, highlighted the deepening bilateral ties between India and Australia during the inauguration of a new Indian consulate in Brisbane on Monday. He described the opening as a “landmark moment” in the evolving partnership between the two nations.
The consulate is expected to play a vital role in addressing the needs of the expanding Indian community in Queensland, where a considerable number of Indian students are pursuing higher education.
Jaishankar referred to the Indian diaspora as a “living bridge” between India and Australia, highlighting their contributions to Australia’s vibrant, multicultural society.
“We have a million-strong Indian diaspora, and certainly, they are making their contribution to the vibrant and multicultural society here,” he said.
The minister highlighted the consulate’s capability to provide timely and convenient consular services, strengthening connections with the local community. He also emphasized the consulate’s role in supporting cultural activities, underlining the importance of preserving cultural heritage for Indians in Queensland.
Jaishankar also visited Australia’s Humanitarian Logistics Capability (HLC) warehouse for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) supplies to the Pacific.
In a post on X, he expressed gratitude for Australia’s role in providing humanitarian aid, particularly to Papua New Guinea, as part of the growing collaboration between India and Australia in the Indo-Pacific.
“HADR has also been an important element of QUAD endeavours,” he said, underscoring the commitment to regional cooperation and mutual support.
Furthermore, Jaishankar met with Queensland Governor Jeannette Young to discuss strengthening economic and trade relations.
His visit, which marked his fifth trip to Australia and first to Brisbane, coincided with ongoing discussions about the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), which he said presents “huge trade opportunities” for both countries.
