Justice Sanjiv Khanna will formally assume the role of Chief Justice of India (CJI) today, marking his oath-taking ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The ceremony, scheduled for 10 a.m., will be presided over by President Droupadi Murmu, who will administer the oath of office to Justice Khanna.
Justice Khanna succeeds Justice Dhananjay Yashwant Chandrachud, who retired on Sunday after a distinguished tenure. Justice Khanna’s appointment as the 51st CJI was confirmed through a formal notification by the Government of India. The Ministry of Law and Justice, acting under clause (2) of Article 124 of the Indian Constitution, announced that the President had appointed Justice Khanna to the highest judicial post, effective November 11, 2024. He is set to serve a six-month term as Chief Justice.
Born on May 14, 1960, Justice Khanna began his legal journey in 1983 as an advocate with the Delhi Bar Council. With a background in various legal domains, including constitutional law, taxation, and environmental law, he has contributed significantly to India’s legal framework. He also served as senior standing counsel for the Income Tax Department, representing Delhi.
Justice Khanna was appointed an additional judge in the Delhi High Court in 2005, and by 2006, he had become a permanent judge. His elevation to the Supreme Court followed in January 2019, where he served until today’s appointment as CJI.
