Kalinina eliminates Wozniacki in Charleston, Navarro breezes past Volynets

Anhelina Kalinina eliminated former world number one Caroline Wozniacki for the second time in as many weeks with a 6-2 6-3 victory in the second round of Charleston Open on Wednesday (April 3).

The Ukrainian 15th seed, who fought back against Wozniacki at the Miami Open on March 21, saving match point at 5-4 in the second set to win 5-7 7-5 6-4, made lighter work of the 2018 Australian Open winner this time out to advance to the third round of the WTA 500 clay court event.

Kalinina will be joined by 10th seed Emma Navarro who breezed past qualifier Katie Volynets 6-1 6-1 in an all-American second round match.

The victory is Navarro’s 21st of 2024, a season which has already seen the 22-year-old lift her first tour-level title at the WTA 250 Hobart International in January.
