Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar made a memorable debut at the Met Gala 2026, bringing an artistic Indian aesthetic to one of the world’s most prestigious fashion platforms, as global celebrities embraced the evening’s theme, “Costume Art.”
Held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the annual fundraiser for the Costume Institute once again blended fashion, art, and celebrity culture, with tickets reportedly costing up to $100,000. This year’s exhibition, marking the opening of the new Condé Nast Galleries, showcased nearly 400 objects, exploring the deep connection between clothing and artistic expression.
Johar turned heads in a custom ensemble by Manish Malhotra, inspired by the works of legendary painter Raja Ravi Varma. The outfit reinterpreted classical Indian drapery through a contemporary couture lens, featuring hand-painted gold detailing crafted by traditional artisans. Drawing from iconic artworks such as Hamsa Damayanti and Arjuna and Subhadra, the look merged heritage with modern design, embodying the evening’s theme.
Reflecting on his debut, Johar said he chose not to “explain India” but to present something deeply personal. “The moment it felt personal, it became Indian,” he noted, adding that Ravi Varma’s work resonated with his own cinematic storytelling. He described the ensemble as a way of “wearing that inheritance” and expressing a lifelong connection to art and culture.
The filmmaker collaborated with stylist Eka Lakhani, continuing his long-standing creative partnership with Malhotra, which has shaped iconic cinematic fashion over decades. Notably, Johar is among the first Indian filmmakers to attend the Met Gala.
The evening also saw strong Indian representation. Business leader Sudha Reddy showcased traditional craftsmanship in a Manish Malhotra creation titled The Tree of Life, inspired by Kalamkari art and crafted over thousands of hours by artisans. Ananya Birla made her debut in a structured couture outfit by Robert Wun, paired with a sculptural metallic mask designed by Subodh Gupta, while Natasha Poonawalla embraced a floral-inspired sculptural look combining Marc Quinn’s artistic vision with Dolce & Gabbana couture.
Global stars also leaned into theatrical interpretations of the theme. Bad Bunny appeared disguised as an elderly man, Heidi Klum wore a Statue of Liberty-inspired ensemble, and Katy Perry arrived in a silver mask. Pop icon Beyoncé returned to the Met Gala after a decade as a co-chair, alongside Anna Wintour and others.
With bold silhouettes, masks, and art-inspired couture dominating the red carpet, the 2026 Met Gala reaffirmed its status as a global event where fashion transcends clothing to become a powerful form of artistic and cultural expression.
