Delhi airport’s first air train set to launch in 2027: What you need to know

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is set to launch India’s first air train system, designed to enhance connectivity between airport terminals, parking areas, and various facilities. This innovative system aims to significantly reduce travel time within the airport and provide greater convenience for passengers.

What is an Air Train?

An air train, commonly referred to as a Sky Train at many global airports, operates on an Automated People Mover (APM) system. Its primary purpose is to streamline the transfer process between terminals, particularly benefiting passengers on connecting flights.

These trains are engineered to accommodate a high volume of passengers, operating on a frequent schedule to minimize wait times. Many of these systems run on elevated tracks or dedicated pathways, helping to avoid ground traffic and enhance safety.

The proposed air train at Indira Gandhi International Airport will connect Terminals 1, 2, and 3, as well as Aerocity and Cargo City. Covering approximately 7.7 kilometers, the system will feature four stations and replace the current DTC bus service used for intra-airport travel.

Indira Gandhi International Airport ranks among the busiest airports in India, serving over 70 million passengers annually. As per reports, indicate that passenger numbers are expected to double within the next six to seven years.
