Kostroma Russian National Ballet to present ‘Global Dance Overture’ at Kamani Theatre

As part of the India–Russia Special Strategic Partnership, the internationally acclaimed Kostroma Russian National Ballet will stage Russia’s cultural and educational project Global Dance Overture at Kamani Theatre on Tuesday.

Vivek Agarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Culture, will inaugurate the evening as chief guest. The event will also be attended by Denis Evgenievich Alipov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to India; Sandhya Purecha, Chairperson, Sangeet Natak Akademi; and Elena Tsarenko, Director of the Russian National Ballet “Kostroma”.

Supported by the Presidential Foundation for Cultural Initiatives, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, along with the Embassy of the Russian Federation in India and the Sangeet Natak Akademi under the Union Ministry of Culture, the programme aims to deepen cultural engagement between the two countries.

The troupe will present the Russian National Dance Show, described as Russia’s largest historical choreographic production. Created by Yuri Tsarenko, Chief Choreographer and Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation, the show traces the folk traditions and cultural diversity of regions including the Caucasus, Buryatia, Siberia, the Far North and Central Russia through elaborate costumes and stylised choreography. The production has reportedly been viewed by over seven million spectators across 50 countries.

In a special segment, Indian dancers will perform “Jayati Jaya Mama Bharatam”, a curated composition celebrating India’s pluralistic cultural identity by weaving together selected folk traditions from across the country.

On Monday, an educational workshop under the Global Dance Overture initiative was held at Meghdoot Theatre-I, Rabindra Bhawan, in collaboration with the Sangeet Natak Akademi.

The restricted-participation programme featured demonstrations and cross-cultural workshops in Russian and Indian dance traditions, along with a “Round Dance of Friendship” flash mob aimed at encouraging artistic exchange among young dancers and choreographers.
