Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday paid tributes to eminent singer Lata Mangeshkar on her birth anniversary, saying that her first Assamese song for a film of Bhupen Hazarika has become an enduring part of the state’s musical memory.
Sharing a link to the song ‘Jonakore Rati, Asomire Maati’ on social media, he said it also forged a decades-long musical bond between Mangeshkar and Hazarika.
“Remembering the legend, Lata Mangeshkar ji on her birth anniversary. Her first Assamese song, ‘Jonakore Rati, Asomire Maati’, composed by Dr Bhupen Hazarika for ‘Era Bator Xur’ in 1956, became an enduring part of Assam’s musical memory. Their remarkable musical bond continued for decades,” Sarma posted.
He said Mangeshkar had once mentioned that the word ‘Aai’, which means mother in both Marathi and Assamese, is a shared expression of love that beautifully connects the two cultures.
“As Assam celebrates #BhupenDaAt100, remembering two musical legends whose voices created a timeless bridge between Assam and Maharashtra,” Sarma added.
