Leander Paes and Vijay Amritraj make history as first Asian men inducted into International Tennis Hall of Fame

Indian tennis legends Vijay Amritraj and Leander Paes made history on Thursday as they became the first Asian men to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. This landmark achievement also makes India the 28th nation to be represented in the prestigious institution.

Leander Paes, an 18-time Grand Slam champion in doubles and mixed doubles, has earned his place in the Player category, while Vijay Amritraj is honored in the Contributor category, evaluated every two years.

Vijay Amritraj, a successful broadcaster and promoter following his illustrious playing career, has used his platform to popularize tennis in India and across Asia. His impact was significant in the 1970s and 1980s, with notable success on the ATP circuit.

A key figure in India's Davis Cup history, Amritraj led the team to its only two Finals appearances in 1974 and 1987. His role in India's boycott of the 1974 final against South Africa, protesting against apartheid, showcased his commitment to principles beyond the court.

Reflecting on the announcement, Amritraj said, “Acknowledging the culmination of a career that started with illness and now to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame is making impossible dreams come true.”

Leander Paes, one of the greatest doubles players in history, achieved the No. 1 ranking in doubles and boasts 8 doubles titles and 10 mixed doubles titles. He represented India in various prestigious events, including the Olympics, Grand Slams, and Davis Cup, spanning three decades. Paes also clinched an Olympics Bronze in Singles in 1996.

Expressing his hopes during the nominations in September, Paes said he aspired to inspire kids worldwide, conveying the message that passion, hard work, self-belief, and dedication can lead to championship success. Throughout his career, Paes partnered with tennis greats like Martina Navratilova, Martina Hingis, and Mahesh Bhupathi.

Richard Evans, a well-known tennis journalist and historian, is inducted in the same category as Vijay Amritraj. The Class of 2024 will be officially enshrined into the International Tennis Hall of Fame on Saturday, July 20, 2024, in Newport, Rhode Island.
