Let’s safeguard species’ future for generations to come: PM Modi on World Wildlife Day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday celebrated World Wildlife Day, reaffirming the government’s commitment to conserving and protecting India’s diverse biodiversity.

In a post on X, PM Modi shared his message, stressing the significance of wildlife conservation. “On World Wildlife Day, let’s reaffirm our commitment to protecting the incredible biodiversity of our planet. Every species plays a crucial role—let’s safeguard their future for generations to come!” he said.

He expressed pride in India’s efforts to preserve wildlife and highlighted ongoing initiatives.

PM Modi is visiting Sasan Gir, Gujarat, home to the last remaining Asiatic lions. His visit coincides with this year’s theme, ‘Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet,’ focusing on sustainable funding and community participation in conservation.

During his visit, the Prime Minister will inaugurate a newly established veterinary hospital in Sasan Gir, enhancing healthcare for the Asiatic lions. He will then preside over a National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) meeting, discussing strategies for wildlife conservation. Additionally, PM Modi will engage with local women forest staff, promoting inclusivity in conservation efforts.

Gujarat has been a leader in lion conservation, with extensive measures in place to protect and expand the habitat of these majestic animals. Asiatic lions now occupy nearly 30,000 square kilometres across nine districts, thanks to the state’s concerted efforts. The Gujarat government has also launched a National Referral Centre for Wildlife in Junagadh and a high-tech wildlife monitoring centre, ensuring advanced care for endangered species.

Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi praised the coordinated efforts of the Gujarat Police and the Forest Department in safeguarding wildlife. In 2024, the state government further strengthened its conservation framework by recruiting 237 beat guards, including women, to enhance protection in the Gir Protected Area.

Gujarat’s commitment to wildlife conservation is also evident through its ‘Gir Samvad Setu’ initiative, which has held over 300 community engagement programs to promote conservation awareness. Additionally, nine breeding centres have been established to preserve herbivorous species crucial to the balance of the Gir ecosystem.

The state’s efforts underscore India’s dedication to wildlife preservation, ensuring that future generations can enjoy and benefit from the country’s natural heritage.
