Lok Sabha adjourned amid continued opposition protests

The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day on Tuesday after repeated disruptions by opposition MPs demanding an immediate discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in 12 states and Union Territories.

The House, which reconvened at 2 pm after two earlier adjournments, was forced to adjourn again within minutes as opposition members entered the well, raising slogans. The Lok Sabha had earlier functioned for only brief periods during the day, with Question Hour and routine paper-laying repeatedly interrupted.

Presiding officer Dilip Saika repeatedly appealed to protesting MPs to return to their seats, saying, “The country wants Parliament to function… every day this cannot continue.” His appeals were ignored as the Opposition insisted on a discussion on the SIR issue.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju told the House that the government was willing to discuss electoral reforms but said the opposition should not insist on a specific timeline or obstruct other business. “There are many issues in the country. Parliament must function according to the rules,” he said. He added that political parties must accept electoral outcomes and not bring “frustration” over election defeats into Parliament.

In the Rajya Sabha, Rijiju repeated that the government was ready for a discussion, while Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said the House should take up the Opposition’s notice under Rule 267 for a debate on SIR.

To address the ongoing deadlock, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has called a meeting of party leaders at 3 pm in his chamber. The Lok Sabha Business Advisory Committee is scheduled to meet at 3:30 pm.

The first day of the Winter Session on Monday was also adjourned following protests from the Opposition members.
