Look forward to hosting President Putin in India later this year: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin and extended an invitation to visit India later this year for the 23rd Annual Bilateral Summit.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Had a very good and detailed conversation with my friend President Putin. I thanked him for sharing the latest developments on Ukraine. We also reviewed the progress in our bilateral agenda, and reaffirmed our commitment to further deepen the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. I look forward to hosting President Putin in India later this year.”

According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, President Putin briefed the Prime Minister on the latest developments related to the Ukraine conflict during the call. The two leaders also discussed key areas of bilateral cooperation and reiterated their shared commitment to further strengthen the long-standing partnership.

The conversation comes at a time of heightened global scrutiny, including recent tariff measures on India in response to its purchase of Russian crude oil.

Prime Minister Modi’s invitation is for President Putin to attend the 23rd edition of the India-Russia Annual Summit, which is part of a regular high-level dialogue mechanism between the two countries.

The interaction follows a recent meeting between President Putin and India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Kumar Doval, who visited the Kremlin on Thursday.
