The Centre has announced a hike in the price of domestic LPG cylinders by Rs 50, effective from April 8. The revised rates apply to both subsidised and non-subsidised 14.2 kg cylinders, including beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY).
Announcing the revision, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the price for PMUY consumers will increase from Rs 500 to Rs 550 per cylinder, while other domestic consumers will see a rise from Rs 803 to Rs 853.
Puri added that LPG prices undergo periodic reviews every two to three weeks, based on global market trends.
The hike comes just a week after a reduction in commercial LPG rates. On April 1, oil marketing companies slashed the price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder by Rs 41. In Delhi, the revised rate for commercial cylinders now stands at Rs 1,762.
India imports around 60% of the LPG it consumes, making domestic prices sensitive to international fluctuations. The average global price of LPG surged by 63%, from US$ 385 per metric tonne in July 2023 to US$ 629 per metric tonne in February 2025.
Despite rising global prices, the effective cost for PMUY beneficiaries was brought down significantly last year. Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi informed the Lok Sabha that the average price for PMUY users dropped by 44%, from Rs 903 in August 2023 to Rs 503 in February 2025, due to subsidies.
As per government data presented in Parliament, the number of PMUY beneficiaries has increased to 10.33 crore as of March 1, 2025. The total number of active domestic LPG consumers in the country stands at 32.94 crore.
This is the first price hike for domestic LPG cylinders since August 2024, when the last revision was implemented.
