The upcoming Maha Kumbh 2025, set to take place in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, promises to be a unique fusion of spirituality and cutting-edge technology. This iconic festival, which attracts millions of devotees from across the globe, will embrace modern advancements to elevate the experience of attendees, ensuring safety, convenience, and an immersive connection with the sacred traditions of Hindu Dharma.
Cyber Security Measures for a Safe Pilgrimage
With an estimated 45 crore devotees expected to visit the festival, the Uttar Pradesh government has implemented robust cyber security measures to protect the digital interests of pilgrims. These measures include the deployment of 56 cyber experts for patrolling, the establishment of a dedicated cyber police station, and the installation of 40 Variable Messaging Displays (VMDs) across the fair area. These VMDs will raise awareness about online threats, promoting verified government websites and offering a helpline number, 1920, for assistance.
A mobile cyber team is also actively monitoring social media platforms like Facebook, X, and Instagram to identify and neutralize cyber threats such as fraudulent websites and scams. The government has already flagged about 50 suspicious websites and is taking action to safeguard pilgrims from digital fraud.
Immersive Digital Experiences at Maha Kumbh 2025
Incorporating innovative technologies, the festival will offer immersive digital experiences to enhance the spiritual journey. A standout feature will be the 360-degree virtual reality stalls, which were first introduced during Kumbh 2019. These stalls, placed at prime locations in the Kumbh Mela area, will allow visitors to witness key events such as the grand procession (Peshwai), sacred bathing days (snaan), Ganga aarti, and other highlights of the festival.
In the evenings, a spectacular drone show will light up the skies, with a fleet of 2,000 drones narrating the mythological tales of “Prayag Mahatmyam” and “Samudra Manthan.” The breathtaking visual display will include the legendary emergence of the Amrit Kalash (nectar pot), offering a unique fusion of faith and technology for both pilgrims and locals.
Digitalization of Infrastructure and Services
To manage the large-scale event effectively, the newly created Maha Kumbh Nagar district is being developed with state-of-the-art facilities. A significant aspect of the preparations is the digitalization of land allotments. Through the “Maha Kumbh Land and Facility Allotment” portal, land availability and allotment statuses are accessible online, ensuring transparency and efficiency. Over 10,000 institutions, including government, religious, and social organizations, have digitized their records.
Drone surveys have been conducted to map the topography of the land before and after the monsoon season, ensuring accurate data collection. GIS-based maps with real-time information on essential public utilities, such as hospitals, parking areas, and emergency services, are also available through Google Maps, making navigation effortless for visitors.
Enhancing Devotee Safety
The safety of millions of pilgrims is a top priority at Maha Kumbh 2025. Remote-controlled life buoys have been introduced to quickly assist individuals in distress. These devices can rapidly reach any location and transport people to safety in emergencies, enhancing security along the riverside.
In addition, the event will see the deployment of underwater drones to provide round-the-clock surveillance beneath the waters of the Sangam. These drones are equipped with advanced technology that allows them to function in low-light conditions and can dive up to 100 meters, transmitting real-time activity reports to the Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC).
Furthermore, AI-powered cameras and surveillance drones will be strategically placed across the event site, ensuring comprehensive coverage and safety for the attendees.
Lost and Found Services
Maha Kumbh 2025 will also introduce high-tech Lost and Found registration centers, developed in collaboration with the state police. These centers will enable digital registration of missing individuals, with updates shared via social media platforms such as Facebook and X. The police will assist in locating lost pilgrims after 12 hours, ensuring a streamlined process for reunification.
Online Stay Booking for Pilgrims
For the convenience of pilgrims, online bookings for stays at Maha Kumbh Gram will be available from January 10 to February 28 through the IRCTC website. The bookings will be handled in partnership with Make My Trip and Go IBIBO, ensuring seamless reservation options. The Tent City will offer first aid services and 24/7 surveillance through CCTV cameras for the safety and comfort of all guests.
A Divine and Digitally Advanced Event
Maha Kumbh 2025 is poised to become a shining example of how tradition and modern technology can come together harmoniously. With visionary leadership from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the consistent efforts of the Uttar Pradesh government, this event will not only be a religious spectacle but also a symbol of innovation, faith, and cultural unity on a global scale.
