Mahakumbh 2025: over 40 lakh pilgrims benefit from 24/7 pure drinking water supply via 233 water ATMs

A total of 233 Water ATMs have been installed across the Mela area, offering uninterrupted 24-hour service. Through these ATMs, pilgrims are receiving pure Reverse Osmosis (RO) water daily. As per official data from a press release issued by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting on Wednesday, more than 40 lakh pilgrims have benefited from this service between January 21 and February 1.

To further enhance convenience, the administration has made the water distribution completely free. Initially, pilgrims could access RO water at Rs.1 per litre via coins or UPI payment, but now the service is free of cost. Each Water ATM is manned by an operator who ensures smooth water dispensing at the press of a button, ensuring easy access for pilgrims.

These Water ATMs are equipped with modern technology that keeps their operation automated and efficient. A sensor-based monitoring system detects technical issues instantly, with technicians on standby to resolve any faults swiftly, ensuring continuous water supply. Each ATM dispenses 12,000 to 15,000 litres of RO water daily, while the SIM-based technology links the machines to the administration’s central network for real-time monitoring of water consumption, quality, and distribution.

This year, the administration has not only ensured a reliable water supply but also prioritized environmental protection by reducing plastic usage.

Special technical teams have been deployed to monitor the Water ATMs and address any technical issues promptly. This initiative marks a milestone for the Mahakumbh 2025, setting a precedent for future events by providing safe, reliable, and eco-friendly access to clean drinking water for all pilgrims.
