Maharashtra Cabinet urges Central Govt to award Bharat Ratna to Ratan Tata

The Maharashtra Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, passed a resolution on Thursday urging the Central Government to confer the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, upon veteran industrialist Ratan Tata, who recently passed away in Mumbai. The Cabinet also paid tribute to Tata during a meeting and passed a condolence proposal in light of his demise.

Ratan Tata, the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, died at the age of 86 at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that Tata’s last rites would be conducted with full state honors. An official statement from the Chief Minister’s office indicated that the state government has declared a day of mourning to honor Tata.

In a post on X, CM Shinde remarked on Tata’s determination following the 2008 Mumbai attacks, stating, “His firm decisions, courageous attitude, and social commitment will always be remembered. The last rites of late Ratanji Tata will be performed with full state honors.”

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described Tata’s passing as a “great loss for the country.” He acknowledged Tata not only as a successful industrialist but also as a remarkable individual whose contributions have shaped India’s global image. Fadnavis said, “A person with a very big heart has left us today; this is a great loss for the country.”

The mortal remains of Ratan Tata, draped in the national flag, have been placed at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) lawns for public homage. According to a statement from Tata Trust, the funeral procession is scheduled to commence at 4 PM today.
