Maharashtra set to unveil India’s largest port project

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stone for India’s largest port project today (Friday). The ceremony will take place near Dahanu in the Palghar district, at Vadavan. In a recent post on X, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the significance of the project, saying, “I will be in Palghar for the inauguration of the Vadavan Port project. This is a very important initiative that reflects our commitment to port-based development and Maharashtra’s progress.”

The Vadavan Port project is anticipated to significantly enhance economic activity and open new pathways for international trade. The port will be developed by Vadavan Port Project Limited (VVPL), a special purpose vehicle (SPV) created by Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB).

The project represents a colossal investment of approximately ₹76,000 crore. Once completed, Vadavan Port will stand as one of the largest deep-water ports in India, featuring major infrastructure developments, terminals, and other commercial facilities under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

The new port is expected to bolster India’s maritime connectivity and solidify its position as a global trade hub. It will be developed as a greenfield, deep-draft major port, capable of operating in all weather conditions. The Vadavan Port is strategically located in Vadavan, Palghar district, which will further enhance the country’s trade capabilities.

JNPA Chairman Umlesh Wagh said that while the capacities of existing ports such as Mundra and JNPA are similar, at about 7.5 million Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), Vadavan Port’s capacity will reach 23.4 million TEUs. This makes it three times larger than current ports.

Wagh also said that the port’s location is close to proposed dedicated freight corridors and the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor. It is poised to serve as a gateway for the proposed India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC) and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).

According to Wagh, Vadavan Port will be a crucial starting point for the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor discussed during the G20 summit, positioning it as a key node in international trade routes.

The port will be equipped with cutting-edge technology and infrastructure, offering direct connectivity to major international shipping routes. It is expected to create significant employment opportunities, stimulate local businesses, and drive overall economic development in the region.

Local residents are hopeful that the Vadavan Port will generate numerous job opportunities and strengthen the regional economy.

The Vadavan Port project is in line with the Prime Minister’s Gati Shakti program, aimed at fostering economic growth through enhanced infrastructure. The project is anticipated to provide direct and indirect employment to approximately 1.2 million individuals, thereby reinforcing the local economy.
