Manipur government lifts mobile internet ban in nine districts

The Manipur government on Monday lifted the suspension of mobile internet services in nine districts of the state. The decision followed a review of the prevailing law and order situation, according to an official notification from the State Home Department.

The districts where the internet ban has been revoked are Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, Jiribam, and Pherzawl. Commissioner (Home) N. Ashok Kumar, in the issued order, urged internet users to avoid any activities that could lead to further suspension of services.

The ban had been in place for over three weeks, with authorities citing security concerns in the wake of ongoing tensions in the state.

On December 8, the Manipur Police conducted search operations in sensitive areas across hill and valley districts. They facilitated the safe movement of 373 vehicles carrying essential supplies along National Highway-2. Additionally, 107 checkpoints were set up across the state to monitor activities and ensure security.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of India sought a detailed report from the Manipur government on incidents of property damage and encroachments. The report, to be submitted in a sealed cover, will provide details of affected properties, current occupants, and actions taken against trespassers.

The court also directed the state government to address the release of funds for temporary and permanent housing as recommended by the Justice Gita Mittal Committee. The next hearing on violence-related issues in Manipur is scheduled for January 20, 2025.
