Manipur: Security forces ramp up operations, seize arms and ammunition in vulnerable areas

Security forces in Manipur have intensified search and seizure operations across vulnerable areas of the state as part of ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability. In a major crackdown, forces conducted operations in the fringe and vulnerable areas of both the hill and valley districts, uncovering a significant cache of arms and ammunition.

During the operation, Manipur Police and Assam Rifles recovered a variety of weapons from Khengmol Hill in Churachandpur District. The seized items included a tear gas gun, a country-made 9 mm pistol with a magazine, five 12-bore single-barrel shotguns, eight rounds of live ammunition, 13 improvised mortar shells, and five improvised heavy mortars.

In addition to the arms recovery, security personnel ensured the safe movement of 172 vehicles along NH-37 and 169 vehicles along NH-2, both carrying essential supplies. Strict security measures are being implemented across all vulnerable locations, with sensitive stretches under convoy protection to guarantee the free and safe movement of vehicles.

A network of 110 checkpoints (Nakas) has been established across the state, covering both hill and valley areas, to tighten security. Despite the extensive search operations, no detentions were reported for violations in any of the districts.

In a separate operation on Wednesday, security forces recovered more arms and explosives from Senam village in Tengnoupal District. The haul included a country-made Lathode gun, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), grenades, petrol bombs, a bore rifle, Pompi ammunition, detonators, and other weaponry.

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh lauded the efforts of state and central authorities in securing the safe return of two youths who were allegedly abducted from Kangpokpi on September 27. “The two young men abducted on September 27, 2024, have been safely brought back to Manipur Police custody. I deeply appreciate the tireless efforts of both state and central government teams in ensuring their safe return,” CM Singh said on Thursday.

The violence in Manipur, which first erupted on May 3 last year, stemmed from clashes during a rally organized by the All Tribal Students Union (ATSU), protesting the demand to include the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe category.
