Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged citizens to strengthen efforts towards water conservation as summer sets in, highlighting successful community-driven initiatives across the country during the 132nd edition of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat.
Addressing the nation, the Prime Minister said campaigns like the Jal Sanchay Abhiyan have significantly raised awareness over the past decade. He noted that nearly 50 lakh artificial water harvesting structures have been created across India under such efforts.
PM Modi also referred to the Amrit Sarovar Abhiyan, under which around 70,000 water bodies have been developed nationwide. He said cleaning and maintenance of these lakes are being undertaken ahead of the monsoon to maximise water storage.
Highlighting grassroots success stories, the Prime Minister cited Wangmun village in the Jampui Hills, where residents tackled severe water scarcity by installing rooftop rainwater harvesting systems in almost every household. Once dependent on long journeys for water, the village has now become a model for sustainable water management.
He also pointed to innovative efforts in Korea district, where farmers constructed recharge ponds and soak pits in their fields to retain rainwater and improve groundwater levels. More than 1,200 farmers have adopted the practice, leading to noticeable improvements.
In Mudhigunta village, the Prime Minister said, around 400 families collaborated to build soak pits at their homes, creating a community-led movement that enhanced groundwater availability and reduced water-borne diseases.
Emphasising the importance of collective action, PM Modi said such examples demonstrate how public participation can effectively address water challenges. He urged citizens to adopt similar measures and contribute to sustainable water management efforts across the country.
